Our Team: Manny Sobral
Manny Sobral started in the sport as an overweight 13 year old trying to slim down at the
Astoria Boxing Club on Hastings & Main. After successfully losing weight, Manny went on to
win three Canadian Amateur Championships, and five Gold medals at International Competitions
representing Canada. At 19 years old, Manny went to the ‘88 Olympics for Canada. After the
Olympics Manny started studying at UBC, and graduated in 1993 from the Faculty of Education.
That same year he returned to the sport he loved as a professional. As a pro Manny held the
Canadian Super Welterweight title from 1996-98, the IBO World Super Welterweight title from
98-99. In 1999 he retired as an Athlete. By 2001 he had completed a M.Ed. from San Diego State
University. In March of 2004, Manny founded the North Burnaby Boxing club. He is currently a
high school teacher, boxing trainer, as well as a promoter. Manny brings his all round boxing
experience to the team, as well as his fine tuned multi-tasking skills
